James 3

 v.1-12

1. Tongue and teachers

v.1 Not many of you should become teachers... v.2 For we all stumble in many ways...stumble in what he says...able to control the entire body

Summary and reflection: it is universal that we sins with our tongues and therefore being a teachers who use our tongues constantly will put us in great threat under judgment. Believers might not think this through when they all tried to teach. Have I?

2. Tongue and sins

A. the influence of the tongue over our entire life v.2b, v.5

B. the influence over our entire life was negative v.6

C. the negative influence over our entire life cannot be subdued by ourselves v.8

D. the expression of not able to subduing our tongue is seen in our blessing/cursing from the same mouth v.10

E. the reality of the blessing/cursing is because of our sin nature v.12 ("Neither can a salt water spring produce fresh water")

Summary and reflection: When confident candidate read about this analysis of the tongue and sins what was the expected result? Shall they become more careful? Totally lost confidence and give up? Relying on the One who can can help us in our sanctification, i.e. the HS? 

(EBC) While the tongue cannot be controlled by man, the tongue of the regenerate person can be controlled by the indwelling Holy Spirit

James seemed to talk to a group of proud Christians who had many blind spots. He just brought them to the point of reflection and made them desperate for a solution. The effect might be to push them towards God for help.

1) Teacher candidates

2) small part influences the entire body

3) The entire body gets into hell. When I argued and complaint the leaders of the church

4) Nature will not have 2 kinds of fruits or water from the same sources while the tongue will. 

5) with the help of the HS
