Luke 18:16
Hebrews 1:1-2
1. (BKC) Old Testament prophetic revelation has now received its end-times climax through God’s Son/ (Dallas Devo) the Son also exemplifies
all Old Testament offices and titles. He’s not just any prophet like Elijah; He’s the
Prophet Moses foresaw (Deuteronomy 18:15). He’s not just any priest like Aaron;
He’s our heavenly High Priest (Hebrews 3:1). He’s not just any king like David;
He’s the King of kings (Revelation 19:16). He’s not just any judge like Gideon; He’s
Judge of the living and the dead (Acts 10:42). And He’s not just any patriarch like
father Abraham; He’s the Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6).
2. Father (BDB)=ancestor (a) of individual; grandfather (instead of precise term) Gn 28:13; 32:10 (J; where used of Abr. & Isaac)
Although the word Father can mean a patriarch type of Father, but BDB has referred the meaning in Isa 9:6 as the fig. of benevolence & protection. This is an exegetical fallacy.
Even if one can interpretate Isa 9:6 as the perfect patriarch then what does that mean to the NT believer? Does it mean Jesus being our perfect examples in life??
3. Alternatively, I see Hebrews 1:1-2 as a reminder of Jesus' being the revelation of God. The word spoke is repeated x2. More than just a revelation of God, He is a revelation in the form of a Son, which is further explained from v.2b forward.
He is a revelation of God in the form of being the heir of all things and Creator of all things. In other words, He did not just show us what God wants us to know about Him, He Himself is God. Therefore, His revelation is what one can get with the highest or the deepest degree.
John 5:24
1. Condition: hears or obey Jesus Word, and believes the One who sent me
(PNTC) Hearing in this context, as often elsewhere, includes belief and obedience. The belief is spelled out, and its object is the one who sent Jesus...because the immediate context is concerned to show how the Son in all he says and does mediates the Father to us. As the words and deeds of the Son are the words and deeds of the Father, so faith placed in the Son is placed in the Father who sent him.
2. Result: has eternal life (present tense) and will not be condemned/will not come in the judgment (present tense), but has crossed over from death to life (perfect tense) (BDAG-to change from one state or condition to another state, pass, pass on)
When we believe in Jesus as our God and Savior (20:31), our eternal life starts now. It is a life that has the quality to last forever that will not be condemned by God or not even coming into the the judgement. And it is so certain that we have already passed from the state of being put to death and into life.
3. Reflection: The present tense tells us reminds me that I have this blessing now. My life should have been changed by this fact today. My joy shall we complete. No more fear.
The difference between Catholic and us is that they will not have the assurance of salvation, but we do. The assurance of salvation is what Jesus wants us to have and it changes our life! One of the change is we can have peace and joy at all time from now until eternity!
John 8:58
1. Context: v.12-59
In different way, Jesus has proclaimed His deity:
a. He is the light of the world v.12. This is a claim of deity because of the result of the Pharisee v.13.
(BKC) “Light” in the Bible is a symbol of God and His holiness (Acts 9:3; 1 John 1:5). Jesus is “the Light,” not merely a light or another light among many lights. He is the only Light, “the true Light” (John 1:9), for the whole world...he has Christ as his Light and salvation (cf. Ps. 36:9).
b. The One Who know where He came from and where He was going. That will qualify Him to testify for Himself alone and the testimony is till true v.14. (BKC) And only God can give testimony to Himself. Jesus was competent to give a true witness of Himself because as God He has a comprehensive knowledge of His origin and destiny (7:29)
c. He was sent by the Father and He judged together with the Father v.16, 17, 25,29. The Father testify about Him v.18 (BKC-with miracles He performed). He identify with the Father (NET) so that when a person knew Jesus they would know the Father too v.19 (BKC He is the revelation of the Father).
d. Where He as going the audience Jesus was speaking to cannot come v.21. From v.12-13, Jesus introduced the idea of darkness and He picked that up again in v.21-24. Three times (v.21, 24a, 24b) He judged that they will die in sin. Believing in Him is the only way out v.24.
The identify of Jesus is not irreverent. We will die in sin without His salvation. For the Jews and all people who reject Him means dying in sin.
2. Not that they reject Jesus, but they wanted to kill Him v.37. The hardening of the heart is consistent with the fact that their father was the devil v.37-45. The idea of killing is consistent in both the people and the devil v.37, 40, 41, 44. There were 2 descriptions of the devil in this passage, first it was a murderer, it was placed even before a more commonly known one, the liar (v.44x2, v.45).
He was a murderer from the beginning=(BKC) he brought spiritual and physical death to mankind (cf. Gen. 3:4, 13; 1 John 3:8, 10–15.)
3. Jew's rejection of the divinity claim of Jesus put them back to the trap of sin and death. They rejection led them to their self-righteousness and thought Jesus had committed the sin of blasphemy. That desire to kill Jesus was consistent with their father, the devil. It murdered the human kind and if the Jews followed it it was not because they were just and put a blasphemy person to die for one's sin, but they committed the sin of murdering.
They were blinding their own eyes.
What do my self-righteous do to me?
