(Dallas Devo 2025) Acts 3:22 A Prophet like Moses
1. Context
From Acts 3:12-26, Peter explained to those who were astonished by the miracles they did to a cripple beggar. Their power came from Jesus, the One Whom the God of their ancestors glorified, but they had rejected and killed v.13-15. Therefore, Peter's encouraged them to repent v.19, 26 and in v.22-23 he repeatedly told them to obey Jesus.
2. Content
Jesus was worthy for them to obey because He is the Moses-type of Prophet as what the OT has prophesized. That kind of obedience was vital to our lives.
Acts 3:22–23
22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’
(NET) [In Acts 3:22,] By quoting Deut 18:15 Peter declared that Jesus was the eschatological “prophet like [Moses]” mentioned in that passage, who reveals the plan of God and the way of God...[Acts 3:23 is] A quotation from Deut 18:19, also Lev 23:29. The OT context of Lev 23:29 discusses what happened when one failed to honor atonement. One ignored the required sacrifice of God at one’s peril.
Lev 23:29 Indeed, any person who does not behave with humility on this particular day will be cut off from his people.
behave with humility=(BDB) be humbled by fasting
According to Acts 3:23, Jesus is not only worthy of obedience, but the very serious kind of obedience that a person will prepare oneself to fast on a particular day.
Question: How does fasting relate to being humbled? Do I still need to do that today to help me to be humble?
(Dallas Devo) Moses was a leader–deliverer prophet. He led the people during the Exodus, and his challenge of Pharoah led to the release of the people so they could journey to the Promised Land. That is also what Jesus does. Jesus leads His people and takes them to eternal life, a place of promise and fulfillment...Deuteronomy 18:15 calls us to listen to this special prophet...a Deliverer who shows the way to God. Let’s listen to Him.
3. Reflection: To Jesus, Who is a deliverer-leader, one needs to be in complete obedience. Listen to Him, instead of reject Him or kill Him. If I have ever rejected Him as a leader like that I need to repent and change.
Or perhaps, I have not rejected Him, but have I seriously obey Him? Be humble mean put my own desire down before His. He is my authority, the leader of my soul. He can decide what to do.
