Psalms 86:1-13

Overview: (NET) The psalmist appeals to God’s mercy as he asks for deliverance from his enemies. (BKC) Because God is good and forgiving, and because He is incomparably able to do great things, the psalmist petitioned Him to show His strength in the face of opposition from the proud.

Structure: (EBC)

          A.      Prayer for Mercy and Confession of Confidence (vv. 1–5)

            B.      Prayer for Mercy (vv. 6–7)

               C.      Hymn of Confidence in the Lord (vv. 8–10)

B′.      Anticipation of Deliverance (vv. 11–13)

A′.      Prayer for Deliverance (vv. 14–17)

v.8-10

1. Repeated:

A. asking for mercy v.3, 16, rescue (help) v.7, 16, 17

because God is mercy v.15, kind and forgiving v.5

Based on His nature, God will continue to save him v.13 (NET) Or “for he will have delivered my life.” The verb form indicates a future perfect here.

B. Your exploits are incomparable v.8,  you are great and do amazing things v.10

C. teach me v.11, I will obey your commands v.11

wholeheartedly committed to you v.11, I will give you thanks with my whole heart v.12

2. Interpretation: David asked for help/rescue and he knew that he did not deserve it.  Deliverance is only based on the mercy of God. In v.8-10, on one hand he was confidence on the power of God among all the gods and people. On the other hand, he expressed the desire to change his present status before God in v.11-13 for his deliverance. In other words, he did not just exploit the mercy of God to save him, but he wants to renew his vow to follow Him for His love!

(EBC) In the confidence that the Lord will have “mercy” (vv. 3, 6) on him, the psalmist looks beyond the present troubles to his own renewed commitment to the Lord, his covenant God...The affirmation of confidence presupposes that this great God will and does deliver those who call on him. He remains true to his nature (vv. 5, 13, 15). Yahweh delivers from death to life because of his ḥeseḏ

3. Reflection: When I ask for God's help, do I ask for mercy like David or do I think I deserve it? God is powerful and He is able to help, but He does not have to save me.

Do I just exploit the mercy of God and has never renewed our commitment to Him?
