Matthew 28:16-20

 1. Context: If the angel descended from heaven just to roll away the stone and let the women see the the empty stone so that  (1) they would believed that Jesus has been raised, just as he said, and (2) they might go and tell His disciples about His resurrection, then the 3rd reason could not be missed bc it is repeated x2. Both by the angel and by Jesus Himself, the Lord will see them in Galilee. In other words, meeting the resurrected Jesus was extremely important for the disciples.

Why?

In v.11-15, there was rumors that was told among the Jews to this day that Jesus was not resurrected, but only his body was stolen. Therefore, some of the disciples worshipped Jesus in v.17, but some had doubt or reservation. (BDAG-to be uncertain about taking a particular course of action)

(PNTC) We must bear in mind that they were not alone in having difficulty in recognizing Jesus. The two who walked with him to Emmaus did not know who he was (Luke 24:16; cf. vv. 37, 41), and the disciples in the boat did not recognize the risen Jesus on the shore (John 21:4). But in any case we may ask, Who has perfect faith? We should bear in mind that even one of the eleven, Thomas, not only doubted but roundly denied the resurrection when told about it by the ten (John 20:24–25)...This raises another question. It is difficult to think that the hesitation was coming from the eleven, considering all that had happened to them during the recent past. It may well be that others than the eleven were present, perhaps even the group of more than 500 of whom Paul writes (1 Cor. 15:6)

2. Repeated words:
worship, all authority in heaven and on earth, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the HS, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, I am with you always, to the end of the age

When Jesus was resurrected and appeared before them, it proved something that make Him deserved to be worshipped, and it proved that He has all the authority, and His name is equal to the Father and the HS, He is the Son, His teachings are worthy to be obeyed and to be taught, He lives forever and can be with those who obey Him forever.

He is the Messiah in Isa 53 and Ps 16, and the Son in Ps 2.

Reflection: Do I see the significant and authority of the resurrection of Jesus? Since He is the resurrected Lord, the Messiah and the Son, do I obey His command? To have the presence of Jesus was a blessing to those who obey. Do I long for that?
