Hebrews 5:1-4

 Outline

    I.      Prologue (1:1–4)

    II.      Part I: God’s King-Son (1:5–4:16)

   III.      Part II: God’s Priest-Son (chaps. 5–10)

      A.      Introduction: the qualified Priest (5:1–10)

         1.      The general requirements for a high priest (5:1–4)

         2.      The Son’s call to priesthood (5:5–10)

1. Repeated: the position of high priest is appointed by God v.1, the honor is only when called to it by God v.4, 5

v.1a added that they were just human like all of us

v.4a added that no one assumes this honor on his own initiative

*No human is able to represent human before God unless God given that position to that person

Reflection: My position is not possible unless God gives them to me. May I never be proud and forget about this.

2. What is the role of v.2-3?

repeated: taken from among the people, able to deal compassionately with those who are ignorant, and  erring, also is subject to weakness, sin offerings for himself

ignorant-BDAG to be unaware about one’s wrongdoing, lapse/do wrong/sin unintentionally

weakness-BDAG incapacity for someth. or experience of limitation...of the frailty to which all human flesh is heir...his vulnerability as a human being

to represent them before God to offer v.1...

He is able to deal compassionately with v.2...(since he also is subject to                                                    weakness)...

                                                and for this reason

he is obligated to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people                                                 v.3

*When a person is appointed to be a high priest to offer sacrifice he is also obligated to make sin offerings for us all. As a human, he knows human. We are unaware of our wrongdoing and we go astray. These vulnerability of mankind has no hope to be accepted by God, except to offer sacrifice,

Reflection: Am I looing forward to have my sin taken care of so that I can be reconciled with God?

Do I deal compassionately with other's weakness? Do I purposely forget my own weaknesses?
