v.1-11
(Green Olive)
Summary of Ch 1-4 is summarized in v.1
We are under the wrath of God, but through faith in JC we are declared righteous (as in a court) (not by abiding the Law which none can make it)
A repeated word is
our past decision to believe ensures our present and our future.
Which word is repeated for x6 (x7 in Gk) from v.1-11?
Trace all these occurrence and read through whom? and what do we get from this person?
Through Jesus,
v.10 與神和好
v.11 與神和好
v.11 以神為樂
The theme is the present and future blessings through Christ based on our salvation.
The repeated blessings=與神和好, why? In Rom 2 we live under God's wrath. We are reconciled with our Creator and our Heavenly Father! The Bible see our relationship with Him as the #1 important. How about you?
Highlight of a few pts:
v.1-2
In v.2, 因信得進入現在所站的這恩典中, (lui) 我們已進於所站立的這恩典中, 恩典=in ch 4, Grace is not what we work for, not because of our good work, our sins are forgiven 人得為後嗣是本乎信 (not by the Law/work).
When did we stand or have the status of being saved by faith? When we die and enter heaven or other time? It had already happen
Why is it so important especially when a person believed and later on sin against God?
We know we are saved.
v,3-5
3 不但如此,就是在患難中也是歡歡喜喜的, x2 歡歡喜喜 for the future hope and in the present suffering. How come?
Knowing… produces, we know that is something will be brought out from that, in order words when given the meaning, we can rejoice even during present suffering.
The present suffering brings about endurance (able to hold on),
e brings about character (the experience of going through a test, special ref. to the result),
c brings out hope (because they saw that God see them through in this sufferings and gave Him all this. He would do the same in the future in the end time),
What kind of suffering do you have?
Disease and pain
Emotional distress
Social relationship with others?
Please share with us your experience of this verse or what you saw in other people.
why do we have the confidence in hope? God love us.
This kind of hope of the future will not be disappointed because of the assurance of God's love.
因為所賜給我們的聖靈將上帝的愛澆灌在我們心裏 the confidence is due to The reality of God’s love in a believer’s heart (as a ministry of the Holy Spirit).
Have you experienced that the HS reminds you that God loves you?
v.6-8
When we are suffering the HS gives us the confidence that God loves us. How can we be so sure in v.6-8? JC die for us while we were still sinners
The timing is important. 軟弱的時候, 罪人=violating norms for a proper relation to deity, Of the state of a person who is not yet reconciled)
[仁人=benefactor]
What quality of God’s love do you see who died for sinners? God’s love does not depend on the quality of the object being loved. Does not depend on the quality or actions of the thing loved. This shows what Biblical love and grace are all about.
Whom shall we apply this principle to?
v.9-11
Other than 藉著他, another repeated term is 更要, 不但如此. (More in the future)
The theme is after we received the blessings what shall we do
When in the future we will be saved from His wrath? we will be saved from the tribulation and the Great White throne.
Not only rejoice in the future hope, but also in the present suffering v.3-5.
v.12-21
Outline:
v.12-14 v.12 state the fact, v.13-14 explains it.
Death of all men from Adam until Moses confirmed that all sinned. And this devastating effects was due to one man's transgression.
Our helpless devastation is described repeatedly: sin entered the world, death through sin, death came to all people, all sinned, v. 12, death reigned (PNTC-There is an impressive absoluteness about reigned. Death’s sovereignty was complete), even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam v.14
v.15-17 "BUT" Grace is different than transgression, and the difference is grace is much more.
- Gracious gift v.15, the grace of God and the grace of JC multiply to the many (who was condemned, their sin did not just got cancelled, but they were given a gift) v.15, the emphasis here is the quantity
- gracious gift from the many failures led to justification v.16, the emphasis here is the different kind of results
- the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through JC (sanctification and glorification) v.17, the emphasis here is the sovereignty
v.18-19 Conclusion
Just as...so too. Same mechanism that made the rest of mankind in transgression, and sinners also made the believers justified (and life) and righteous.
The transgression is called disobedience and the righteous act is called obedience. What a difference obedience made. But we cannot do the obedience ourselves. Only J can and only when we have His power, we can.
v.20-21 Even in the dispensation of law, when the transgression may increase, grace is enough. The sufficiency of grace will also be seen in our sanctification (reigned in) (Will explain more in ch 7).
Reflection: Why did Paul emphasize on the effect of grace is more than the effect of sin? The beginning half of the chapter said we are standing in grace (have peace with God). This is a confirmation about this fact. The assurance of salvation is also an assurance of our sanctification.
Questions:

5. there is no accounting for sin when there is no law v.13, the law came in so that the transgression may increase v.20, every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God...through the law comes the knowledge of sin
