Romans 3

v.9-20

1. This conclusion may be hard for the Jews to accept, but Paul had already proved that in previous section. "Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin v.9"

Jews were proud to know the Law and were able to lead the blinds, but Paul said, "there is no one who understands." They did not even comprehend the meaning (BDAG-have an intelligent grasp of someth. that challenges one’s thinking or practice, understand, comprehend τὶ someth). Morally, they are worthless v.12.

And the description from 10-12 is quoted from Ps 14:1-3 where the fool who denied the existence of God is being described.

v.13, 14 is quoted from Ps 5:9, and 140:3, where David described his enemies (the evil man, the boasters, evildoers, liars, and bloodthirsty and deceitful man).

When the Jews read the Psalms, they might have never thought about that were the descriptions of themselves. Am I like that? Putting myself above the Scriptures and thought that are only for others?

2. In v.15, the Isa 59 passage is quoted where are the list of sins make God stayed and turned away from man. We are not only sinners, but we are quick to sin and we never know the right path. In v.6, We boldly said we do not fear God. This is total depravity.

3. In v.19, Paul seemed to wake up the Jews, (BKC) The Law was not a special talisman that the Jews could obey or ignore as they wished; they were “under” it and accountable to God.

(BKC) No one can argue in his own defense that he is not under sin. The Law points up God’s standards and illustrates people’s inability to live up to them

In 20, Paul finished up the argument that all have sinned and the results is all will be judged. (BKC) The Mosaic Law is an instrument not of justification but of condemnation.

Then in v.21-31, he wrote the final conclusion. Since we are all sinners, the hope for all of us is Jesus who gave us the righteousness of God. None of that will be ours. Therefore, none should be boast. v.27

Summary: It does not matter If you are a Jews or followed the Law. We are all saved by grace therefore treat other people with no despise.
