Ob and In:
1. The comparison: the LORD, the household gods, the soothsayers, and the dreamers.
v.2b-3 Therefore the people set out like sheep and become scattered because they have no shepherd. 3 “I am enraged at the shepherds and will punish the lead goats.
They did not chose the LORD but the other gods. Therefore the people became scattered (BDB afflicted).
2. Repeated words:
No shepherd v.2, 3, lead goats v.3
From Him (God) will come the cornerstone, the wall peg, the battle bow, and every ruler v.4
From the wrong choice of "God" became a problem of wrong leadership or lack of leadership. They chose the wrong god and only listen to lies and no real blessings to them. They did not have God as their shepherd. Their current leaders or the undershepherd was accountable.
3. The leadership that God will provide for them would be totally different than what the household gods, the soothsayers, and the dreamers gave them:
wickedness, lie, emptiness and give comfort in vain v.2
vs
the cornerstone, the wall peg, the battle bow, and every ruler v.4
(BKC) the Cornerstone (cf. Isa. 28:16), the Tent Peg … the Battle Bow (cf. Ps. 45:5), and the Ruler (cf. Gen. 49:10; Micah 5:2). These terms emphasize the strong, stable, victorious, and trustworthy nature of Messiah’s rule
(NET) The metaphor of the wall peg (Heb. יָתֵד, yated), together with the others in this list, describes the remarkable change that will take place at the inauguration of God’s eschatological kingdom. Israel, formerly sheep-like, will be turned into a mighty warhorse. The peg refers to a wall hook (although frequently translated “tent peg,” but cf. ASV “nail”; TWOT 1:419) from which tools and weapons were suspended, but figuratively also to the promise of God upon which all of Israel’s hopes were hung (cf. Isa 22:15–25; Ezra 9:8).
every ruler=(NET) The author is asserting by this choice of wording that in the messianic age God’s rule will be by force.
Reflection: When I chose God as my God then He will provide the leaders, especially, the Messiah. Victory is guarantee because the LORD will be with them. However, if our country (USA) did not choose God as our God then we will hear the wickedness, emptiness, and comfort in vain. Then people will become scattered or afflicted. Pray for the turn of heart of people back to God.
