Overview: (BKC) Since Job had (unknowingly) silenced Satan by not cursing God, and since he had repented of his pride, his suffering did not need to continue.
Structure:
v.10b the LORD doubled all that had belonged to Job...12 So the LORD blessed the second part of Job’s life more than the first. He had 14,000 sheep,
The details of how God doubled the belongings of Job was now explained in fuller details in v.12-15. Then the rest of his life in summary in v.16.
Syntax: after he prayed for his friends (NET) This is a temporal clause, using the infinitive construct with the subject genitive suffix. By this it seems that this act of Job was also something of a prerequisite for restoration—to pray for them.
the LORD restored what Job had lost (NET) “he returned the captivity of Job,” a clause used elsewhere in the Bible of Israel (see e.g., Ps 126). Here it must mean “the fortunes of Job,” i.e., what he had lost
Question: If this is a form of captivity then, what did God catpure Job to? The wilderness, where Job was away from His blessings?
Reflection: Job had past with the flying color right in the beginning in ch 1. Why he suffered longer than that was because of how he responded to his friends and the fact that he needed to pray for them. After he had done that God brought him back from the wilderness. What did I need to do to be restored? Any relationship needs to be repaired? Any sin needs need to be repented?
2. v. 11 So they came to him, all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they dined with him in his house. They comforted him and consoled him for all the trouble the LORD had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.
(BKC) The restoring of his estate demonstrated to his friends that God had restored him
Questions: Why did God double Job's belongings and age? What does double blessings mean? Abundance?
Summary and reflection: As far as from the human prespective, Job got everything back and more. The materials, the family, and other's people's respect. What Job needed in the beginning, their visit/caring, comfort, console, and money all came at this time when they saw how God restored Job's estate. Was it too late? Will I do something like this too late like they did?
