1 Peter 1:13-21

 Structure:

13 Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully sober, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance, 15 but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct, 16 for it is written, “You shall be holy, because I am holy.”17 And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one’s work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence.

My notes:

v.13-16 5 exhortations:

約束你們的心get your minds ready for action

(BKC) Obedience is a conscious act of the will. Christians in conflict need a tough-minded holiness that is ready for action.

謹慎自守being fully sober

(BKC) It means to be free from every form of mental and spiritual “drunkenness” or excess. Rather than being controlled by outside circumstances, believers should be directed from within.

main verb  專心盼望set your hope v.13

(BKC) Holy living demands determination...Four times Peter has already spoken of the Savior’s return and the accompanying ultimate stage of salvation (vv. 5, 7, 9, 13).

As a result:

不要效法...放縱私慾的樣子do not comply with the evil urges

main verb 要聖潔become holy yourselves v.15

(BKC) First Peter 1:15–16 do not speak of legal requirements but are a reminder of a Christian’s responsibility in his inner life and outer walk. Though absolute holiness can never be achieved in this life, all areas of life should be in the process of becoming completely conformed to God’s perfect and holy will.

main verb 存敬畏的心,度你們在世寄居的日子live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence v.17

(BKC) live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence. a tender conscience, a watchfulness against temptation, and avoiding things that would displease God. (NAC) The Petrine believers cut across the grain of the culture in a way that alienates them from the mainstream

(NAC) A genuine fear of judgment hinders believers from giving in to libertinism

v.18-21

(NAC) The remaining verses (vv. 18–21) explain why believers should be fearful

(BKC) The high cost of salvation—the beloved Son’s precious blood—calls for believers to live in reverent fear before God. Holy living is motivated by a God-fearing faith which does not take lightly what was purchased at so great a cost.
