Ob and In:
Repeated phrase:
1. Joshua died, those elders the elderly men who outlived him and witnessed all the great things the LORD had done for Israel also died. That entire generation passed away.
During the time these people lived people worship the LORD, personally experienced the LORD's presence or seen what He had done for Israel.
Reflection: No matter how great the work you did like Joshua or Moses, you will die. Pray that God teaches us how to use our life.
2. The sad reality was the new generation grew up without the personal experience of the LORD’s presence or seen what he had done for Israel.
(EBC) But the word “knew” probably has the sense of “acknowledge” (cf. Prov. 3:6, where “know” is trans. “acknowledge”), thus indicating unbelief rather than ignorance. They rejected both the Lord’s grace toward them and their responsibilities toward Him. This led to the idolatrous practices cited in the verses that follow.
Reflection: The reality is, from faithful father to the faithless children, all it takes is just one generation. How urgent this is to teach our next generation.
Girls meeting:
Who had died in v.10? Who are the whole generation?
Who are the 3 groups of people in v.7?
1. Joshua
2. people who served the LORD throughtout the lifetime of Joshua
3. people who served the LORD throughtout the lifetime of the leaders who outlived Joshua and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel
What happened to the new generation v.10-11?
knew=acknolwedge, what led to idol worship?
When people did not acknolwedge the LORD nor what He had done for Israel. They did not believed, rather than ignorance. This led to the idol worship.
What is so alarming from this passage?
How long did it take for people of to switch from serving the LORD to worship idol?
What does God remind you today? Do not be too confiden about our own strength or our influence. We will not stay very long. Take care of the faith of the people younger than you.
Their forsaking of the LORD arose the LORD in anger and gave them over to their enemies. Then they cried out to God and God raised up judges (NET) Since these figures carried out more than a judicial function, also serving as rulers and (in several instances) as military commanders, the translation uses the term “leaders.”
Judges saved them out of their enemies, but they would not listen to their judges, but quickly turned away from God. They were stubborn.
Note the shape of their cycles. What does God remind you today? Downward spiral when we are stubborn and sin against God.
1 Samuel 17:32-37
What was the difference how David see himself and how Saul saw him?
Why there was a difference? Because of his past experience, he has the presence of God
Was his past experience give him confident of his own strength?
What made David think that God would help him now v.36? How did he preceive the Israel army? How did David know the Israel army better than Saul?
Reflection: What does God remind you?
It does not matter what other people think about me. What matters is Who is with me? Am I doing His will?
What is my "bear and lion experience" which can help me to fight the Goliath?
