Judges 2:1-5

 Ob and In:

1. Why did the Scripture mentioned where the Angel of the LORD went up from?

v.1 (BKC) “Gilgal” was where the Israelites first camped after they crossed the Jordan. There they were circumcised and dedicated to covenant faith and obedience (Josh. 5:2–12). (EBC) 1–2 The deplorable spiritual condition of the Israelites, not their lack of chariots, lay behind their failure to dispossess the Canaanites. To expose Israel’s sinfulness, the “angel of the Lord” appeared to them (v.1).

2. The gracious offer of the everlasting covenant met with the disobedience of the people. What would happen?

a. announcement of disobedient

v.2 (BKC) God emphasized Israel’s disobedience with a question designed to stir their consciences: Why have you done this?

b. announcement of judgment.

Questions: the disobedient was related to their failure to tear down of the altars, why was the judgment being the luring away by pagan gods? Would that be forming a cycle? Isnt the propose of judgment was to correct a person??

v.3 (BKC) As a result of Israel’s disobedience, the divine aid by which Israel would have driven out the Canaanites was withheld (cf. 2:20–3:6)...The snare of Canaanite idolatry anticipated the cycles in the days of the Judges.

3. What was the condition of the people when they offering the sacrifices?

v.4-5 (BKC) 2:4–5. The weeping of the Israelites left little more than the place name (Bokim, “weeping”) for it apparently did not express true repentance since the people did not turn permanently from their disobedience. The sacrifices offered to the LORD at Bokim seem to have been only an external ritual rather than an expression of true faith.

Reflection: Do I treasure the grace of God? Am I just like the Israelites?

Have I ever being confronted by God in my disobedience?

As a result of disobedience the Israelites would not be able to drive out their enemies and thus they would became ensnare to them. What have I disobeyed God and let things that I cannot control to ensnare me? Electronic media?

When I "repent" and ask for forgiveness am I ready to turn away from sins?
