Ob and In:
1. Repeated phrases:
A. the reminder to obey God's commandments
v.1 You must keep carefully all these commandments, v.6 you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him
B. the purpose of humbling and testing
v.2 by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not
v.3 So he humbled you...to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD’s mouth
The Bg:
v. 1 You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors
To obey the commandments, live according to His standards, revere Him, to rely on His Words to live were the essential to live, increase in number and go in and occupy the Promised Land.
Reflection: How important is obeying God to me?
2. The humbling experience was to test them to see if they have it within them to keep His commandments or not. The humbling that God gave was the kind that given by parent to their children to discipline them.
4 Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years. 5 Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
This is a loving-discipline, not a harsh discipline, which meant to drive you to obey Him.
Reflection: What did God's humbling experience do to me? Do I understand His heart more? Do I obey Him more?
3. Four verbs: Keep (commandments) v.1, Remember (the whole way...forty years) v.2, v.5 Be keenly aware that (God disciplines them like a parent), v.6 Keep (commandments, live according to His standards, and revere Him).
The remembering and being keenly aware help them to keep God's commandments.
