1 Samuel 16:1-5

 Ob and In:

1. v.1 How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel...for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons.”

God had a will: He rejected and He selected.

2. v.2 Samuel replied, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!” But the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice

(EBC) The Lord therefore reminded Samuel of an accompanying (if secondary) reason for making the journey: to sacrifice a heifer (presumably as a fellowship offering; cf. Lev 3:1) in conjunction with the ritual of anointing (cf. similarly 9:11–10:1; 11:15)

3. v. 4 Samuel did what the LORD told him.

From mourning for Saul, to protest against the idea to be sent to anoint another king, and now Samuel was obedient. Perhaps Samuel felt safer with the dual purposes.

Reflection: I should ask God about my trip to Jerusalem. Is this His will? Also, will I find secondary reason to visit there?
