Numbers 3-4

 Observation/Interpretation:

(I) Different age limit in numbering for the Levites in ch 3 ((1 month old and above) than those in ch1-2 (20 years old and above), because the purpose of the numbering is not for military use, but for the value of life.  The Levites substituted the first borns, whose lives were saved by the LORD, to serve the LORD. The concept of substitution and redemption was displayed here and later on seen in Jesus' salvation to believers.

Application: As a believer, I am thankful for the substitution and redemption of Jesus, but am I using my life to serve Him like the Levites did? Scriptures repeated that the Levites belonged to the LORD, because whom they substituted for are His, set apart and belonged to God v.12-13. In what areas of my life, are not being set apart to God or do not belong to God?

(II) In ch 4 (age 30-50), the numbering of Levites is different from ch 3. Also the order of descriptions of the 3 families are set in the order of their responsibilities in the tabernacle. Those who serve in the innermost part first and then those served in the outside, probably to avoid the Levites to touch the things they cannot touch.  The priests will covered everything before the Levites (哥轄) can come to move 4:15. No touching. While the Levites were under the supervision of the priests 3:32, 4:28, 4:33, the priests needed to appoint the responsibility of the Levites to prevent their death 4:1-20.

Application: God is holy and violation causes death. Am I serious in worshiping Him? Also, the supervisors have their own responsibilities to assign responsibilities and to protect the assistant, but the assistant also has the responsibility to assist. How am I doing as a supervisor and as an assistant?

(III) Moses and the Levites obeyed God 3:16, 4:37, 41, 45, 46-49. (same pattern continued from  ch1-2).
