Structure:
In 9:1-10:11 Moses encouraged Israel to conquest the Cannities and gave them the reasons why God would defeat the Cannities for them. It was not because of their righteousness, but because of the wickedness of the Cannities. Then Moses traced from the history of their continuous rebellion.
9:7-21 the rebellion at the Horeb where they supposed to get the 2 tablets of covenant
9:22-24 the rebellion later on in the wilderness
Note: 9:25-10:11 Moses went back to the 2 tablets incident and how he prayed for them and God did not destroy them.
Observations and Interpretations
Repeated Words:
(1) Not self-righteous of Israel v.4,5, they were a stubborn people v.6,13, 27, provoked the LORD your God and God was angry enough with them to destroy them v.7, 8, 19 20, continued to provoke 22, rebellion 7, 23, rebellion from the very first day 24 , sinned, quickly turned from the way v.12, 16, doing evil before the LORD 18
Stubborn/stiff-necked (NET)The image is that of a draft animal that is unsubmissive to the rein or yoke and refuses to bend its neck to draw the load. This is an apt description of OT Israel (Exod 32:9; 33:3, 5; 34:9; Deut 9:13).
Application: Are we self-righteous and do not see the reality? Do we see the reality that we could have provoked the LORD enough to destroy us? In what way, we are stubborn and refuse to bend down? Or are we rebellion and turning away from God?
(2) The exhortations from Moses
Revere God-obey His commandments 10:12a
Love God-to sever Him and keep His commandments 10:12b
11:1 Love God-do what He requires, keep His commandments

11:8, 13, 14, 22, 26 Pay attention to the commandments

so that you may be able to enter the Promised Land and enjoy
Principle: Revere God and love God are both expressed as obeying His Words and serving Him all the times and with all our might. Obeying Him is based on our previous experience and Israel would be rewarded.
