(1) 27:9-10 “Be quiet and pay attention, Israel. Today you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10 You must obey him and keep his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today.”
(NAC) On the eve of conquest and in anticipation of the covenant ceremony Moses was outlining, he reminded them that once more they had become God’s people by confession of that reality. In other words, existential awareness of election and redemption must periodically be invoked so as to make the historical facts behind it personal and ongoing. On the basis of that confession as God’s people, they now had to obey his commands and decrees, that is, the covenant stipulations that Moses had been imparting (v. 10).
Application: Being God's elected people and our obedience to Him are 2 inseparable facts. No one should confess to be God's people and not to obey Him. Are we being reminded about this fact constantly? Do we grow in our obedience to Him?
(2) On the list of things being cursed 27:15-26 (idols, disrespecting parents, moving of boundary markers, misleading a blind person, perverting justice to the poor, sexual immorality, murderer) some of them repeated from the 10 commandments. Disrespecting parents followed worshipping idols in both the 10 commandments and here. It is a serious sin in God's eyes.
Application: Parents were supposed to teach their children about God, how to remember Him and His Words. Therefore, children should value or prize them highly. The commandment was critical for the existence of the nation. Sometimes, I have a hard time doing this, but this is important not only to me personally, but to the society as a whole.
(3) Following the curses as Reversal of Blessings in
28:15–19 are the list of curses that will totally destroy them v.20-24 and the curse that no one will come to save them v. 25-37 (29, 31).
(NAC) Having broken fellowship with the Lord, they would have no one to deliver them from their insanity and its consequences.
Application: Disobedience will bring disaster to our lives. Maybe we cannot imagine that while we are enjoying the blessings of the LORD. Israel were told ahead of time of these consequences but they fell eventually. That became our warning.
