The main idea:
1:5 Now this is the gospel message we
have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is
no darkness at all.
2 possibilities:
1)
1:6 If we say we
have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying
and not practicing the truth.
2)
1:7 But if we
walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Light
is the ability to reveal something to us. Some people do not even want to be
exposed and therefore they keep on walking in the darkness. However, they said
they have fellowship with God this is lying.
The
other type of person walk in the light. They come close to God and let the
light shin in them. The result is told here: their sins are cleansed, but in
v.9 more details are given.
When we walk in the light our sins will be
revealed to us. 3 kinds of responses when we see our sins:
a)
1:8 If we say we
do not bear the guilt of sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
When we walk in the light and got exposed, we
still argue that we do not bear the guilt of sin. We are not lying to others
but we are lying to ourselves.
b) 1:9 But if we confess our sins, he is
faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.
c) 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word
is not in us.
This time, people tried to argue that they have not sinned from
the beginning. God’s word disagreed with this.

Summary: God is light,
and He reveal to us who we are. However, some people do not even want to come
close to God and see our true self. They keep walking in the darkness thinking
they are still pretty good. The worst part is they claimed they have fellowship
with God, but they do not let the light shin to them. This is pure lying.
Among those who comes
to God some people still deny the truth revealed to them. They are lying to
themselves. But some admit and confess their sins. The blood of Jesus cleanses
us from all our sins and unrighteousness.

Reflect: This passage
reminds me the true meaning of “fellowship.” Are we willing to come to God? Or
let Him reveal to our hearts our sins when we read the Bible? V.6 says “If we
say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness,” Are
we being truthful when we claim one thing but our hearts do not follow? Are we
keep on walking in the darkness? Is there something that is so attractive to us
the we are not willing to leave the darkness?
The second things reminds
me are those who come to God but still deny they have sin. How foolish that
will be! Because just by admitting we got our sins forgiven! Why don’t we spend
time today and come to God and ask Him for forgiveness.
