Psalm 119:81-88

 (1) Summary (Kel)

The psalmist admits that his soul fainted away in waiting for the great vindication from those who almost consumed him, but he did not forsake the law (119:81–88).

(2) Repeated words:
119:81 I desperately long for your deliverance.
I find hope in your word.
119:82 My eyes grow tired as I wait for your promise to be fulfilled.
I say, “When will you comfort me?”

grow tired as I wait for= (BDB) waste away, be exhausted, fail, lit. of fading grass
For the future, the psalmist was exhausted but he was firm that God would deliver him. His Word and promise sustained him.

119:86 All your commands are reliable.
I am pursued without reason. Help me!
119:87 They have almost destroyed me here on the earth,
but I do not reject your precepts.
119:88 Revive me with your loyal love,
that I might keep the rules you have revealed.

On one hand, the psalmist was being pursued by the arrogant people who did not keep God's words (v.21, v.85) but on the other hand, the psalmist kept obeying God's words. He even asked God to revive him so that he might keep the rules v.88.

(3) Reflection:
Sometimes, we see that people may give up their belief if they face persecution/unpleasant changes in their lives. What makes the psalmist different from these people? His faith is not based on the prosperity of life.  He pursued God, not prosperity. Having said that does not mean he did not care about his deliverance, but he relied his deliverance on the promise of God.
