Summary (Kel)
The psalmist commits himself to keeping the LORD’s commandments faithfully and enthusiastically as he prays for gracious intervention in his life-threatening situation, acknowledging that everything he has is in the LORD and everything in the world is under his care (119:57–64).
Note
119:57 The LORD is my source of security.
I have determined to follow your instructions.
119:58 I seek your favor with all my heart.
Have mercy on me as you promised!
(2) Repeated words to show his urge to follow God's words
Reflection: Do we follow God's words with all our heart? Do we follow God's words eagerly and without delay? No tardiness to devotion? Or to Sunday worship?
Note
(1) There were only 2 requests from the psalmist and each one of them followed the 2 characters of God:
119:57 The LORD is my source of security.
I have determined to follow your instructions.
119:58 I seek your favor with all my heart.
Have mercy on me as you promised!
119:64 O LORD, your loyal love fills the earth.
Teach me your statutes!
In the beginning of this passage, since God is his source of security the psalmist devoted himself to follow His words, and that formed the foundation of his plea for mercy.Teach me your statutes!
(Kel) In the last verse of the stanza ... If the whole world benefits from the LORD’s loving care, then how much more his faithful people! This care is the chief benefit of having God as one’s portion. The psalmist therefore desires to know even more about God’s revelation. He prays, “Teach me your statutes.”...his desire for the LORD to fulfill his word, and his commitment to live in obedience to it, prompted his prayer to be taught more.
Reflection: Do we have any response when we know about God's character? Do we desire to know more about God when we encounter His love? Goodness is one thing that represents God's glory Ex 33:19. How can we not be drawn to Him?
(2) Repeated words to show his urge to follow God's words
I have determined to follow your instructions v.57
with all my heart. v.58
I consider my actions and follow your rules. v.59
eagerly and without delay. .60
The ropes...tighten... but I do not forget your law. v.61
In the middle of the night I arise to thank you v.62
I am a friend to all your loyal followers, and to those who keep your precepts. v.63Reflection: Do we follow God's words with all our heart? Do we follow God's words eagerly and without delay? No tardiness to devotion? Or to Sunday worship?
Do we consider all God's followers our friends? Some Christians do not hold the same political view with us, or they are anti-vaccine or anti-masking. Do you still keep your friendship with them just because they are God's followers?
