Psalm 97

 Overview:

(NET) The psalmist depicts the Lord as the sovereign, just king of the world who comes in power to vindicate his people.
(Kel Ps) The saints should rejoice and renew their commitment to righteousness in view of the revelation of the awe-inspiring epiphany of the LORD who comes to judge his adversaries and to rule with righteousness.

(1) 2 groups of audience: (a) v.1-6 the earth and coastlands v.1, 4, all the nations v.6. All of them "see" and have responses. (b) v.7-9 All who worship and boast about idols v.7, and the people of God v.8. Not only do they have responses, but their responses were vastly different.

(2) What they see: (a) v.1-6 The LORD reigns v.1 with equity and justice v.2  and 6 and He burns up His enemies v.3-4. (b) v.9 the LORD is sovereign

(3) Application: Not only do these people have responses, the psalmist also wanted the reader to have responses and applied the principle in their lives v.10-12. Love the LORD, hate evil. Be a faithful follower v.10. Be godly and morally upright v.11. Rejoice and give thanks v.12.

Reflection: There is always a dilemma when a country was sanctioned or attacked because of the wicked things they did. Most of the time, the people of the country suffered, not the evil regime. How did the reign of the LORD differ from our present situation? He burns up the enemies v.3, and protects the lives of His followers v.10. In the NT, we know that He can do this because the believers were rapture before the Great tribulation (1 Thess 1:10,  4:17)
Praise God for His power and for righteousness.
