Overview: (NET) The psalmist praises God for his marvelous deeds, especially the way in which he provides for and delivers his people.
(1) 111:1 Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the godly and the congregation.
In v.1, there were at least 3 parties: "(You) Praise the LORD, " "I will give thanks," and "the assembly of the godly and the congregation." In other words, the psalmist encouraged the reader to praise God just like what he did in front of others.
Reflection: When you ask someone to do something, do you do it first yourself? What have you asked your children to do lately? What have you demanded your spouse to do for you?
In a positive way, the psalmist acted as an effective teacher by demonstrating to his students how to praise. Do we teach by our actions?
111:2 The LORD’s deeds are great,
eagerly awaited by all who desire them.
111:4 He does amazing things that will be remembered
Do we reflect and remember what God has done to us? After He answered our prayers, do we remember Him? What have God done to you this year?
(3) 111:7 His acts are characterized by faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.(Kel) The works are both faithful and just, and so his word is trustworthy. In this immediate context, settling Israel in Canaan’s land was a demonstration of his faithfulness to the covenant promises, his word, but by driving out the Canaanites he also revealed his justice...When God made the covenant with Israel, he included more than wonderful promises. He gave them the Law, their obligations to the covenant. If all God’s works are faithful and just, then what he demanded in the Law was also trustworthy and upright, established forever.
Reflection: Do we just love what God has done but ignore His Words to us?
