Overview: (BKC) In spite of God’s faithfulness to Israel (Ps. 105) her history was filled with faithlessness and ingratitude. Psalm 106, a confessional psalm, traces some of the Israelite’s rebellious activities and God’s judgments on them. The psalmist then prayed that the Lord would deliver His people from their captivity.
(EBC) In its stress in Israel’s failure, it contrasts with Psalm 105, where the psalmist records the fidelity of God in his presence, protection, and providence. The canonical place of this psalm after 105 moves the reader to reflection on the tenacity of human rebellion.
Repeated words: (1) God has steadfast love or enduring loyal love v.1, 7, 45 over His people and therefore those who do what is right "all the time" are blessed v.3. (2) (BKC) 106:6 The psalmist introduced the theme of confession with a general statement that they, the Israelites in the psalmist’s day, had sinned as their fathers (i.e., ancestors) had done. This prompted him to relate their ancestors’ sins. The psalmist pointed out that one of their sins was failing to "remember your many acts of loyal love..." God had done to them in Egypt and rebelled at the Red Sea v.7. (3) Even they praised God for His rescue of the Red Sea v.12 they "quickly forgot and challenged God again with the craving for meat v.13-14.
Reflection: Let us pray that we will remember and do not quickly forget. Believe in the steadfast love of God.
