Main point: The disciple asked Jesus why He did not reveal to the world that He is the Messiah, and Jesus replied to him that those who obey His word God will love, come to and take up residence with V.22-23. The world did not lack evidence of Who Jesus is, but they refused. Therefore, Jesus only selected individuals who believed and obeyed. God chose to have a relationship with these people. That special relationship was made when the Holy Spirit and the Peace it brought to us.
Commonly misunderstood verses: [v.26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you] (NET) This verse is addressed to the apostles. The context limits the “all things” to the interpretation and significance of His person and work. The Spirit worked in their minds, reminding them of His teaching and giving them insight into its meaning (cf. 2:22; 7:39; 20:9). (PNTC) John’s purpose in including this theme and this verse is not to explain how readers at the end of the first century may be taught by the Spirit, but to explain to readers at the end of the first century how the first witnesses, the first disciples, came to an accurate and full understanding of the truth of Jesus Christ. The Spirit’s ministry in this respect was not to bring qualitatively new revelation, but to complete, to fill out, the revelation brought by Jesus himself
[v.27a 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you…”] (NET) This should probably be understood ultimately in terms of the indwelling of the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, who has been the topic of the preceding verses. It is his presence, after Jesus has left the disciples and finally returned to the Father, which will remain with them and comfort them.
Reflection: The believers/followers of Jesus enjoyed a special relationship with God that the world does not have and thus they would have peace in their hearts that the world could not give. To me it is an encouragement to believe and obey His word. In fact, just from v.22-31, the theme repeated twice in v.23, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.” And v.24, “The person who does not love me does not obey my words.” Do we love Jesus and obey His word?
