Main points: v.12-17 Jesus set an example for His followers. (NET) Jesus tells his disciples after he has finished washing their feet that what he has done is to set an example for them. In the previous verse he told them they were to wash one another’s feet. What is the point of the example? If it is simply an act of humble service, as most interpret the significance, then Jesus is really telling his disciples to serve one another in humility rather than seeking preeminence over one another. If, however, the example is one of self-sacrifice up to the point of death, then Jesus is telling them to lay down their lives for one another (cf. 15:13).
Do I dare to sacrifice for others as a follower of Jesus?
V.18-20 Jesus knew beforehand that Judas was going to betray Him. Yet, He did not stop Judas because He submitted to the Father’s will. Even betray and its result would be painful Jesus did not sway. V.18b ‘The one who eats my bread has turned against me.’ (NET) “has given me a great fall,” “has taken cruel advantage of me,” or “has walked out on me.” Whatever the exact meaning of the idiom, it clearly speaks of betrayal by a close associate. (BKC) The fact that Jesus knew all this in advance (before it happens) and that it fit the Scriptures helped the disciples after the fact to believe God sent Jesus (John 13:19; cf. 14:29).
Jesus did not just ask His disciples to follow Him, He Himself also followed the will of the Father even with a great cost.
Reflection: No one will like to be betrayed by their close associate/be taken cruel advantage/been walked out on. Only because there is a higher called Jesus did not stop Judas. I try to imagine the worst thing that will happen to me. Will I not stop it from happening if I know it will be good for God’s work? Or if it is beneficial to brothers and sisters? If yes, then why would I care so much if I sacrifice my pride or convenience for God’s work/brothers’ and sisters’ need today?
