John 7

 v.1-9

Background: (NET)  After healing the paralytic on the Sabbath in Jerusalem (John 5:1–47), Jesus withdrew again to Galilee because of mounting opposition. In Galilee the feeding of the 5,000 took place, which marked the end of the Galilean ministry for all practical purposes. John 7:1–9 thus marks Jesus’ final departure from Galilee.

Main point: V.1b He stayed out of Judea because the Jewish leaders wanted to kill him. However, Jesus’ brother urged Him to go to Judea (where the Jewish leaders were) to show off to the crowd His power and glory v.3-4 and they said that because they did not believe in Him v.5. (PNTC) Jesus’ response to his brothers is not that he is planning to stay in Galilee forever, but that because his life is regulated by his heavenly Father’s appointments he is not going to the Feast when they say he should.

v.10-18

Main point: Not only did Jesus went to feast not openly,  but the people who spoke about Him had to do that secretly v.10, 13. It was obvious that the Jewish leaders were looking for Him to put some serious charges against Him. However, Jesus still found a chance to teach the people openly and the outcome was surprising. 7:15 Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said, “How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?”

v.19-36

Main point: (1) v.19-24 inconsistencies among the Jewish leaders: v.19 they did not keep the law, but they tried to kill Jesus because they thought He broke the law of Sabbath. Second, (NET) Under the Mosaic Law, “On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised” (Lev. 12:3). If that day fell on a Sabbath, circumcising a boy would seemingly violate the Sabbath Law of rest. Yet the Jews circumcised on the Sabbath. Therefore, Jesus argued, if care for one part of the body was permitted, then certainly the healing of a whole body (that of the paralytic) should be allowed on the Sabbath. Hence they had no reason to be angry with Him. (2) v.25-36 Not only the leaders were against (v.14-19), but the crowd said Jesus was demon-possessed (v.20-24), now even the residents of Jerusalem despised Jesus v.25-27. Part of this group tried to seize Jesus v.30. This is distinct from the attempted arrest by the authorities v.32.

Difficult text: v.27 But we know where this man comes from. Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.” (NET) In the Talmud [Jewish commentary]Rabbi Zera taught: “Three come unawares: Messiah, a found article, and a scorpion.” Apparently OT prophetic passages like Mal 3:1 and Dan 9:25 were interpreted by some as indicating a sudden appearance of Messiah. It appears that this was not a universal view: The scribes summoned by Herod at the coming of the Magi in Matt 2 knew that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. It is important to remember that Jewish messianic expectations in the early 1st century were not monolithic.

v.37-52

Main point: After Jesus shouted out His invitation for people to come to Him and drink, part of the crowds received Him.  In v.40, “When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, ‘This really is the Prophet…’This is the Christ!’” No reason is stated why they received His words, they just did.  Some opposed Him based on false information v.41b-42. However, why did the opposers (and the officers) not lay hands on Him v.44-45? Perhaps they also believed somewhat in His words.

The rulers were so sure that Jesus was not the Prophet/Christ because none of the rulers who knew the law well believed in Him v.48-49. However, they should not have spoken for all of them. Nicodemus, being one of rulers, did not agree with them. He challenged their judgment not being based on facts v.51. In other words, they claimed to be supported by the Law, but in fact they were based on false information.
