John 12:44-50

Parallel ideas: Jesus talked about “Who sent Him,” v.44-45, and “the Father Himself who sent me “ v.49 -50 as well as, “I have come as a...v.46 or I have not come to...v.47.  The purposes of Jesus’ 1st coming are listed in this passage as followings:

  • as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness v.46

  • to save the world v.47

  • Eternal life v.50

In other words, the meaning of the believers not remaining in darkness means a person being saved and having eternal life. In v.47 Jesus described the process of seeing the light as hearing His words and obeying them. If one accepts then they are no longer in the darkness or they will be saved. Our attitude towards Jesus’ Words are vital to our lives. The word will judge a person on Judgement Day.

From the beginning of chapter 12, “hear and obey” as the problem of the crowds. They shout “Hosanna,” but they would not believe in Jesus when they insisted what they knew from the Law that Messiah was forever. “Hear and obey” would keep people from being hardening of heart or the divine punishment.

Reflection: How do we do in “hear and obey?” If not, is it because we are not convinced that Jesus’ Words are God’s Gods? Or we do not obey to God even we know that the Words are from Him?

What is your experience of “hear and obey?” Jesus said we are in the light or we have hope in our lives. Do you? Psalm 19:8 The LORD’s precepts are fair and make one joyful. Do you have this joyful satisifaction in your heart?
