John 10:30-42

Main point: Jesus Words and His deeds (miracles) matched, but the Jewish leaders ignored His deeds and attempted to stone Jesus to death because of His words. It was because they could not ignore His deeds and some of them knew that they were clear evidence that Jesus came from God and Himself is God.

Main verses: 10:30 The Father and I are one.” (NET) ...Jesus and the Father are [not] one person, but one “thing.” Identity of the two persons is not what is asserted, but essential unity (unity of essence).

10:34 Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’?10:35 If those people to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods’ (and the scripture cannot be broken),10:36 do you say about the one whom the Father set apart and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? (NET) The reason the OT judges could be called gods is because they were vehicles of the word of God (cf. 10:35). But granting that premise, Jesus deserves much more than they to be called God...If it is permissible to call men “gods” because they were the vehicles of the word of God, how much more permissible is it to use the word “God” of him who is the Word of God?

Reflection: 1. Jewish leaders picked and chose what they wanted to use as evidence against Jesus. Do I pick and choose what I want to know from the Bible about God? Do I just read what I want to read? Skip the difficult part that is hard to understand? 2. 10:39 Then they attempted again to seize him, but he escaped their clutches. Please be aware that this is the 2nd time the Jewish leaders want to stone Jesus v.31 (c.f. 8:59).  (NET) “...until his “hour” comes, Jesus is completely safe from the hands of men: His enemies are powerless to touch him until they are permitted to do so.” People can treat us unreasonably, but God is the One who ultimately controls what happens to us.
