Psalm 95

 (1) Overview

(NET) The psalmist summons Israel to praise God as the creator of the world and the nation’s protector, but he also reminds the people not to rebel against God.

(2) Outline
(Kel Ps)

          I.      Descriptive Praise: The psalmist acknowledges the greatness of the LORD as King above all gods, and exhorts the congregation to worship him (1–7a).
      A.      The congregation should sing praises to their saving God (1–2).
      B.      The faithful should acknowledge the greatness of the LORD as King over all his creation (3–5).
      C.      The congregation should worship the LORD because he is their God and they are his people (6–7a).

II.      Prophetic Oracle: The psalmist reports God’s warning to his people not to rebel against his word as their ancestors did and were prevented from obtaining their full inheritance (7b–11).
      A.      Wish: He desires that “today” they should hear his warning (7b).
      B.      Warning: God’s oracle warns them not to harden their hearts as did their forefathers in the wilderness who were hindered from entering the rest (8–11).

(3) Key verse

95:11 So I made a vow in my anger,
‘They will never enter into the resting place I had set aside for them.’ ”

As seen in the outline above, this verse is in the warning section (IIB)  of this song. Israel people were stubborn and challenged God's authority even though they had seen His work v.9. God is a great God as shown in v.1-7. People should praise Him and fear Him. However, they did not. That's why God said they were stubborn.  Therefore, God was "continually disgusted" with them v.10 and they could not enter the rest that God had intended for them v.11.

Reflection: I was not very happy the last 2 days because I could not go outside for the bad air quality. During the pandemic, I used to go out almost everyday to walk or bike. Psalm 95:11 reminds me that the real rest is from obeying God. Even I cannot do what I like, but if I obey God I still have rest in my heart and that is more important. Praise God for Who He is and give Him the proper obedient.
