James 4:7-12

 (1)v. 6vb “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”

4:7 So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Combining v.6-7, James was describing the proud believers from v.7 on. 

v.7b do not resist to the devil

v.8a away from God

Reflection: Being proud is not just a character problem. It is a spiritual problem. It was the character of devil. It is a attitude which shows that we are away from God.

(2) What to do if believers were proud?

v.8b cleansed hands (external behavior) as well as making hearts pure (internal)

v.9 Grieve, mourn, and weep. Because our hearts were away from God

[grieve]=(BDAG) to experience distress, endure sorrow/distress, be miserable

v.10 Humble before the Lord

Reflection: When the proud believers see that how awful their sins are they would be broken down and feel miserable about themselves. When was the last time you broke down when you sin who awful your sins are?
