Exodus 35:30-36:7

 (1) 35:30 Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 35:31 He has filled him with the Spirit of God—with skill, with understanding, with knowledge, and in all kinds of work, 35:32 to design artistic designs, to work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, 35:33 and in cutting stones for their setting, and in cutting wood, to do work in every artistic craft

35:35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as craftsmen, as designers, as embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and in fine linen, and as weavers. They are craftsmen in all the work and artistic designers.

The Holy Spirit gave Bezalel the skill to do all the work. He was an all-round artist in different areas. Also, the Holy Spirit did not just give him the skill (craftsmen), but the thinking (design).

Reflection: Have you ever found some talents or special ability that was not yours, but given by the Holy Spirit when you served in the church? You never knew that you could talk like that, but you are able to do that when you taught in Sunday school. Or you have the ideas of how to teach the class given to you by the Holy Spirit.

(2) 35:34 And he has put it in his heart to teach, he and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.

(NET) The expression means that God has given them the ability and the desire to teach others how to do the work. The infinitive construct “to teach” is related to the word Torah, “instruction, guide, law.” They will be able to direct others in the work.

Reflection: The gifted person was also a person that could lead others to get involved in that ministry, e.g. a person who is gifted in evangelism is not a person who shares the Gospel effectively, but he/she can affect others to share the Gospel as well.

(3a) 36:2 Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person in whom the LORD had put skill—everyone whose heart stirred him to volunteer to do the work,

On one hand, the Holy Spirit gave the skills to man. On the other hand, the skilled persons were willing to do the work.

(3b) 36:3 and they received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to do the work for the service of the sanctuary, and they still continued to bring him a freewill offering each morning.

36:5 and told Moses, “The people are bringing much more than is needed for the completion of the work which the LORD commanded us to do!”

36:7 Now the materials were more than enough for them to do all the work.

Not only did God give Bezalel and Oholiab skills to do all kinds of work, people also gave generously.

Reflection: Do we respond to God by your willingness to serve like Bezalel and Oholiab? Or we respond to God's generosity by giving generously?
