v.1-15
Couple verses talk about family in today's passage.
v.6 Grandchildren are like a crown to the elderly,
and the glory of children is their parents.
and the glory of children is their parents.
3 generations are mentioned here. Their love to each other is mutual. See NET notes, "The proverb comes from a culture that places great importance on the family in society and that values its heritage." In today's society, the elderly might love the grandchildren, but we seldom see the love of children to their parents. May our heart be changed and show our elderly parents our love and respect.
This verse is not directly related to family, but very practical in our daily family life:
v.14 Starting a quarrel is like letting out water;
stop it before strife breaks out!
What does, "letting out water," try to show? NET notes said, 'The image involves a small leak in a container or cistern that starts to spurt out water. The problem will get worse if it is not stopped. Strife is like that." In the Palestine, water is valuable and people will to like to stop the leak no matter how small it is. Do you see the harmony in your family as very valuable? Are you willing to sacrifice your own right and have harmony in the family? Dont start a quarrel.
Last one,
v.9 The one who forgives an offense seeks love,
but whoever repeats a matter separates close friends
NET notes said, forgive=“covers” “covers over.” How people respond to the faults of others reveals whether or not they have love. The contrast is between one who “covers” the fault of a friend and one who repeats news about it. The former promotes love because he cares about the person; the latter divides friends. In Cor 13: 7, love" bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Forgives, bear, and having hope in your spouse, your family and your brothers and sisters in the church. Only in this manner we can secure a loving relationship.
