John 19:17-30

 (1) Repeated words

The fulfillment of the Scriptures about Jesus' garment and His clothes v.23-24, the fulfillment that Jesus drank the sour wine v.28-30a, Jesus' find words: it is completed v.30b.
19:28 After this Jesus, realizing that by this time everything was completed, said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty!”
v.30b “It is completed!”

(NET) “It is accomplished,” “It is finished,” or “It is ended.”

(2) Fulfillment
a.Jesus' garment being divided fulfilled Ps 22:18
    22:18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;
    they are rolling dice for my garments.

(EBC) 18 The division of the garments by lots continues the same picture as in v. 15c. The psalmist feels as if he is about to die; therefore the wicked are waiting to swoop down on him like vultures. The “garments” (“clothing”) are divided up like the spoils from battle.

b. His drinking of the sour wine fulfilled Ps 69:21b
    69:21 They put bitter poison into my food,
    and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.
(EBC) his identification with the psalmist and with all who suffer. The psalmist felt as if he was about to go into the pit and that no one empathized with him. Our Lord suffered more intensely in rejection and death. Therefore he understands all who suffer disgrace (Heb 2:17–18; cf. 4:15).

(3) Reflection: Although the prophecies regarding the death of Jesus were related to the humiliation by the enemies, rejection and sufferings. Worse than that was the fact that all these were done under the public eyes v.19-20. Jesus' last words "it is completed," may refer to many things, but in this context, all the prophecies were completed, no matter how bad they were. What have we done to Jesus? He had done all these to us, what have we done to Him? Sleep in on Sunday morning and skip church? Enjoy our family time and forget about serving God?
