John 18:19-40

 (1) Annas could not point out the accusation of Jesus v.19-24

Jesus responded to Annas' challenge to His teaching and said everything He said was said in public v.19-20. In other words, Annas could not generally said what Jesus taught was wrong or misleading to the public. Annas needed to point out which part of Jesus' teaching was wrong. His servant could only respond by striking Jesus' face v.22. In other words, Annas had no answer. Therefore, when Jesus asked him for what was wrong for His teaching v.23 Annas could only sent Jesus to Caiaphas.

(2) Caiaphas could not point out the accusation of Jesus v.28-30
Nothing was said about what had happened when Jesus was sent to Caiaphas, but we can see that the result was they told Jesus to Pilate v.28. They could not tell Pilate what was the accusation for Jesus v.29-30. They could only assure to Pilate that Jesus was a criminal v.30.

(3) Pilate could not point out the accusation of Jesus v.31-38
Pilate repeatedly asked Jesus, "are you the king? v.33, 37. He thought he had finally made Jesus admit His crime of being a king, but Jesus answered him, "You say that I am a king" v.37b.

(4) Jesus was put to death without any proof
v.38 “I find no basis for an accusation against him..." However, Pilate executed Jesus anyway.

Reflection:  Annas, Caiaphas and Pilate did not care about the evidence. They insisted on putting Jesus to death according to their own desires. When we search for God's will in our prayers do we seek carefully for the evidence that God had given up already?
