John 17:11-26

 (1) repeated word, "safe"

a. The disciples were kept safe by the Holy Father v.11, 12. The only exception or the only person that was not safe was Judas v.12. Therefore safe is related to our salvation, not safety in the common sense.
b. The "Word" was mentioned before Jesus talked about the disciples not belonging to the world and hated by the world v.14.  Jesus mentioned the disciples not belonging to the world again and asked God to set them apart in truth v.17. The world was also related to the evil one v.15. In summary: the disciples were safe from Satan when God set them apart in truth, in the Word.
c. the disciples were set apart so that they might carry on his mission in the world after his departure  v.18-19.

Reflection: Our safety in salvation was not something we need to worry about. Jesus prayed for us. Thank God we do not need to wait until we die to find out.  Second, we have no fear with the world or with Satan because of the truth or the Word that God gave to us. May the Bible be in our heart and we are skillful in using the Scriptures in our lives.
Our safety was for sure and it is by no means to make us laid back. What part have you been involved in the world mission? Or what part are you willing to take up for the world mission?

(2) repeated word, "one."
17:11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one.

The reason why the believers were kept safe was for them to be one, or to be unified v.11.

v.21 that they will all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me.
17:23 I in them and you in me—that they may be completely one, so that the world will know that you sent me, and you have loved them just as you have loved me.

The reason why believers were unified with each other and with God was

a. for the world will believe that the Father had sent Jesus v.21-23.
b. for the believer to see Jesus' glory v.24-26.

Reflection: Our assurance of security brought us to this eternal relationship with each other. There will be no other relationship closer than this. When we are one the world will know Who Jesus is. Being a believer and being a  longranger were not compatible. Second, being in unity with Jesus makes us see His glory. How precious is our oneness in Jesus.
