John 8:12-30

 (1) Jesus is the Light

8:12 Then Jesus spoke out again, “I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

First, He is the Light of the world. He covers all mankind. No other light is provided.
Second, those who believe in him will walk in light for the whole life. Never will we walk in darkness.

(BKC) Coming to Christ for salvation results in a different kind of life. A believer will never walk in darkness, that is, he will not live in it (cf. 12:46; 1 John 1:6–7). He does not remain in the realm of evil and ignorance (John 12:46) for he has Christ as his Light and salvation (cf. Ps. 36:9).

Reflection: Do you love light or holiness? Or do you enjoy darkness or sin? We do not need to sin, because Jesus promised us we will never walk in darkness. Once we are saved we are free. We have the freedom not to sin.

(2) The objection from the Pharisees v.13-21
They claimed that Jesus's testimony was not true  because He testified about Himself. First, Jesus said He did not need another person to testify, but He could be still true because He was God. v.13-14. Second, Jesus said He was not alone and the Father testifies about Him v.16-18.
This led to one of the repeated themes in the Gospel of John: Jesus always did the Father's will.

v.27b the things I have heard from him I speak to the world
v.28b I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me
v.29 And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do those things that please him

Reflection: Are we like Jesus that we hear from God? Without reading the Bible we will not know God's will. In other words, do we read God's Word regularly? Second, do we speak what God taught us? Do we do God's will? Third, God will not leave Jesus alone because of Jesus' obedience. Are we obedient children of God?

(3) In v.21-24, Jesus responded to His opponent and said 3 times, "you will die in your sin" v.21, 24a, 24b.
8:24 Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”

It is clear that people go to hell not because of Jesus. Someone may blame God for people going to hell. It is clear from this passage that people go to hell because of our own sin. Unless we believe we will die in our sins.

Application: This passage seems to repeat what John had discussed. Chapter 7 they questioned already where Jesus came from. Here, they asked again. In Chapter 5: 31-40, Jesus told them He has the testimony from John,  the Father, and the Bible. Now, Jesus gave them the solemn warning: you are going to die. The Savior has come, but you dont  want him to save you. There is no one to blame, but yourselves.
I dont mean we have to begin to share the Gospel from this passage, but when people has already have read the Bible and know the proofs we need to warn them. They will die in sin unless they believe.
