(1) the Word
The Word was there when nothing has come in being v.1a. The Word has the same position to say that the Word was "with God" v.1b. And finally, the Word has all the characteristics of God. The Word was fully God v.1c. " (NET) "what God was the Word was.”
The Word was the creator v.3 and therefore He has life v.4a.
(2) the relationship between the Word and mankind
The Word shines to mankind. [And the light shines on] (NET) t expresses the timeless truth that the light of the world (cf. 8:12, 9:5, 12:46) never ceases to shine.
In other words, mankind does not naturally have light. Only when the Word shines we can have that. As a matter of fact, "darkness" v.5 is parallel to everyone v.9. We, darkness, do not have a very friendly relationship with the Word, because v.5b "the darkness has not mastered it" implies that we wanted to master it, but we cannot. (NET) "master"= “the forces of evil which seek to “overcome (conquer)” [light] " or “he mastered his opponent.”
(3) What is the reaction of God and the Word with our adversary to Him?
God sent us the helper, John v.6. He helped us to testify for the light v.7a when He came into the world v.9. John pointed out, as a witness, Who Jesus is. God helped us in an extend that He, the Creator, came to His Creation, the world.
Reflection: If He did not come, we will remain in darkness, and remain in the adversary condition. If God does not help us, we are hopeless. He knew our condition and extended His hands over and over again (He shines, He sent John, He Himself came). What was your hopelessness before you were saved? How stubborn we were when the light shines on us? Is there any darkness inside of us that we are still wrestling with the light?
Our Creator cares about us. Our separation from the darkness must be so important that He Himself came. Do we see that as important to stay away from sin?
