(1) David's difficult position
Although David longed to see Absalom, he did not do so. It was probably because Absalom murdered his brother. As the judge of the nation, David needed to act according to the Law of God. That's why the Tekoa would normally go to the king for-to listen to the judgment from the king. The king should have acted in the position of God in determining the right and wrong.
v.17b for my lord the king is like the angel of God when it comes to deciding between right and wrong! May the LORD your God be with you!’ ”
(2) Joab's help
Reflection: When God saw that sinners like us violated the Law I assume God has the feelings as David. He loved us because we are His creation, but we are also sinful and deserved death. God did not just act according to His heart and took us back. He remains justice and paid the penalty of sins by the blood of His own Son, Jesus Christ so that we could be saved.
v.1 Now Joab son of Zeruiah realized that the king longed to see Absalom. 14:2a So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman
If there should be anyone who would tell David what to do, that person should be Nathan, the prophet. He would have told David what God wanted David to do. However, the person who was behind the Tekoa woman was Joab, who was the general. Perhaps, he wanted to win favor in David' eye and pushed David to do something after his own heart.
v.22 Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord the king, because the king has granted the request of your servant!”

In the time of thanksgiving what do you thank God for?

v.1-24
B:
1. Joab realized...so Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman. He told her...Then Joab told her what to say. v.1-3
Joab was the general of the king and he was a good servant and a good personal friend to him.
2. The argument of the woman:
a. The special situation of the woman was that to obey the Law would do more harm to their family. She asked for a exception to ask for a permission to override the Law v.4-7. She realized that to ask for the exception will be blamed or being punished (BDB) (by man and God?) as injustice, but she was willing to be blamed v.8-9, and not the king who gave her the exception.
b. When talking about David's family, she commented that what David had devised v.13 was not what God devises v.14. What David devised was against God's people (not for the good for the people of Israel without the presence of prince Absalom), and therefore he was guilty for not bring Absalom back v.13. What God devises was to restore v.14. She wanted the king to not to remove Absalom from the inheritance of God like what the king had promised to do her and her sons v.16.
3. David let Absalom back, but he did not let him see his face v.23-24.
Seeing a king's face was a favor, just like the favor people of God will have when we see His face.
R:
As a judge, David's call was crucial when the Law strictly applied would bring harm than good to the people. However, the benefit of Absalom was an assumption, but David was also willing to give the exception. Am I willing to judge things based on the situation? To see the benefit that would bring to the people?
