1 Samuel 21

 (1) The beginning of the fleeing from Saul v.10

21:10 So on that day David arose and fled from Saul. He went to King Achish of Gath.

(2) The conditions of David v.1-9
a. v.1 Ahimelech was shaking with fear when he met David, and said to him, “Why are you by yourself with no one accompanying you?”

Abimelech found David suspicious and therefore he asked the above question. In other words, David had no food and therefore he needed to take a risk and asked the priests for that.

The priest needed to give him the bread out of ordinary circumstances.
21:4a The priest replied to David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread at my disposal. Only holy bread is available

(NAC) Under normal circumstances the Torah required that such food be consumed only by “Aaron and his sons … in a holy place” (Lev 24:9). Yet specific Torah laws might be set aside if higher-level considerations warranted, especially the preservation of life

That means the priest saw that David was in desperate need and therefore, he was willing to do the exception.

b. David had no weapon and therefore he needed to ask the priest if they had any. It did not make any sense for the priest to have any weapon. However, there is 1. Both the bread and the sword the Scriptures said, "Other than that, there’s nothing here v.9"

Reflections: God provided for David his needs out of ordinary means. He was in a desperate situation, but he got it through by the provision of God. I am sure David went through many tough times in his many years of fleeing from Saul, but he was watched out by God.
Do you have any time in your life that you have no food (and no weapon)? I pray that God will provide your needs out of ordinary means. '
