Psalm 62

Overview:

(BKC) This psalm reflects David’s confident trust in the Lord in spite of opposition. In silence he waited for God, his Strength and Security, to deliver him from his deceitful enemies. The psalm contrasts the security of trusting God with the insecurity of relying on human devices. The psalm falls into three stanzas of four verses each.

Observations and reflections:
A. v.1-4 David himself trusted in God alone, not in man
v.1a For God alone I patiently wait;

(NET) Heb “only for God [is] there silence [to] my soul.”

David waited for God in silence which indicates his assurance of deliverance by God v.1-2. Meanwhile, his enemies spoke threatening words v.3 and pronounced blessings with mouths (but inwardly they uttered curses v.4). They were unreliable because they were a leaning wall or an unstable fence. It was dangerous to trust in them.

B. v.5-8 David invited others to trust in God, not in man
Again David waited silently for God alone as his protector and deliverer.  v.5-6 are almost identical with v.1-2. Now, not only he himself trusted God David also invited other people to trust him, at all times, and pouring out their hearts before God v.8. If David had not enjoyed the blessings from trusting God he would not ask others to follow him. David competed with his enemies and asked people to trust in God and not in man.

C. v.9-12 Reason why we should trust in God, not in man.
1. Man did not last v.9a, they did not carry much weight v.9b or they were insignificant.
2. Man trusted in money and that was a false confidence v.10.
3. God would judge men

    62:11 God has declared one principle;
    two principles I have heard:
    God is strong,
    62:12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.
    For you repay men for what they do.

(NET) You repay men for what they do. The psalmist views God’s justice as a demonstration of both his power (see v. 11c) and his loyal love (see v. 12a). When God judges evildoers, he demonstrates loyal love to his people.

Reflections:
Will I follow David who trusted in God or will I follow his enemies who spoke threatening words and lies? David poured his heart before God and trusted Him all the time. His enemies trusted in the money they got from oppression and robbery. They were extremely wealthy.

David followed God alone. Only God alone is his protector and deliverer. With God David is sufficient. He would not seek any other help. He would just wait patiently. Will I? Or I only do that because there is no one who can help me then I will just wait for God? I pray that I will be like David and wait patiently before God.
