Overviews:
The psalmist calls down judgment on his foreign enemies, whom he compares to ravenous wild dogs.
Observations and Reflections:
v.1-5"Deliver me," "protect me," "rescue me" v.1-2; "spring into action and help me," "take notice of me," v.4; "rouse yourself and punish all the nations," v.5.
David was confident that God would help him because he is innocent.
v.3b...but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O LORD.
v.4 Though I have done nothing wrong, they are anxious to attack.
Do you call out to God for help when you encounter difficulty? On one hand, do you trust Him? On the other hand, are you confident that you are innocent and God will help you?
v.6-7, v.14-15
These 2 sections are almost identical. David's enemies are like wild dogs. They wandered around and looked for food and refused to quit until they were full v.15. They also threatened him and said, "Who hears?" v.7. Why did David repeatedly mention them?
59:6 They return in the evening;
They came again and again and their threats were repeated.
What will be your response when the news repeats again and again about the bad news: Covid 19, wildfire, and hurricane, etc.
v.9-10, v.16-17
These 2 sections are also identical.
59:9 You are my source of strength! I will wait for you!
For God is my refuge.
59:10 The God who loves me will help me;
God will enable me to triumph over my enemies.
59:16 As for me, I will sing about your strength;
I will praise your loyal love in the morning.
For you are my refuge
and my place of shelter when I face trouble.
59:17 You are my source of strength! I will sing praises to you!
For God is my refuge, the God who loves me.
To respond to the threats of the enemies David repeated twice that God was his help and he trusted in Him.
The 2 sections also have variations:
a. "I will wait for you," v.9 vs " I will sing praises to you" v.17
b. "The God who loves me will help me" v.10 vs "I will sing about your strength; I will praise your loyal love in the morning" v.16.
If we reconstruct the psalm. The enemies came then David trusted God and waited for God to help him. Then the enemies came again then David knew God would him AND he praised God ahead of time.
Can you praise God before you see the outcomes of your prayers? Do you sing about His strength and His loyal love to you?
