Overview
(NET) Psalm 48. This so-called “Song of Zion” celebrates the greatness and glory of the Lord’s dwelling place, Jerusalem. His presence in the city elevates it above all others and assures its security.
Observations:
(1) v.1-8 God was their protector and defended them
v.3 God is in its fortresses;
he reveals himself as its defender.
v.4 For look, the kings assemble;
they advance together.
(NET) [v.1-3] God is the protector of Zion and reveals himself as the city’s defender—this is necessary because hostile armies threaten the city [v.4-8].
48:8 We heard about God’s mighty deeds, now we have seen them,
in the city of the LORD, the invincible Warrior,
in the city of our God.
God makes it permanently secure.
v.8 (NET) The community had heard about God’s mighty deeds in the nation’s history. Having personally witnessed his saving power with their own eyes, they could now affirm that the tradition was not exaggerated or inaccurate.
(2)v.9-11 Why they were protected and defended by God?
48:9 We reflect on your loyal love, O God,
within your temple.
The temple was the place that God met with the people. He dwelled among them. The people gathered there and reflected on how God had abided to His covenant and promise and loved them.
(3) v.12-14 From the past to the present and then to the future
The psalmist addressed the community and asked them to walk around the city and see.
(NET) The city’s towers, defenses, and fortresses are outward reminders and tangible symbols of the divine protection the city enjoys.
Both the endings of v.8, "God makes it permanently secure," and v.14, "For God, our God, is our defender forever!" describe the assurance of the psalmist.
The psalmist deduced from the history and their presence situation that God will be their secure forever.
Reflections:
Israel is a very small country and the psalmist wrote this while kings assembled and advanced together to fight with Israel v.4. I think a lot of other people were terrified. However, the psalmist looked at how God shattered their enemies' large ships with divine power v.7 he felt very secure. Not only did he feel safe for himself, but he knew that the future generation would be safe, too v.8, 14. Why? God was the invincible Warrior v.8b and He was loyal in His love to them v.9.When do you see God as the invincible Warrior in your personal life? When your prayers were heard? When you hear that the church's building is almost done? When you see people come to Christ?
Do you worry about your future? Do you feel insecure with the present situation? Remember what God has done in the past, and doing in the present will give us security about our future.
