Psalm 47

Overview:

(NET) In this hymn the covenant community praises the Lord as the exalted king of the earth who has given them victory over the nations and a land in which to live.

Observations:

(1) v.1-4

a. The psalmist encourages all the nations to clap and shout to God for He is the great king over all the earth v.1-2.

v.2 “awesome” (NET) it refers to his capacity to fill his defeated foes with terror and his people with fearful respect.

2 parties were mentioned: (1) "all nations," "whole earth," "nations" and "countries;" (2) "us," Jacob, "whom he loves."  Therefore, His greatness was shown when He fought for Israel and defeated the all the nations under Israel.

47:3 He subdued nations beneath us

    and countries under our feet.

(BKC) He is the great King over the earth. Specifically, this was demonstrated by His subduing the nations when He chose Israel as His inheritance. This subjugation of foreign nations was experienced in a small measure in Israel’s history, but will be especially true in the coming Millennial Age.

b. The second reason that He is the good king is because He provides for His people

v.4 He picked out for us a special land

to be a source of pride for Jacob, whom he loves

The land that He picked for Israel was a pride choice.

(NET) “the pride of.” The phrase is appositional to “our inheritance,” indicating that the land is here described as a source of pride to God’s people.

Why He provides such a good resources to them? Because He loves them.

(NET) Jacob whom he loves. The Lord’s covenantal devotion to his people is in view.

(2) v.5-9

Three times the psalmist commands the readers to sing v.6-7. People are encouraged to be rejoiced now not just because they witnessed how great a king He is to Israel, but because He is the king over all the nations. He reigns over the nations. He ruled over the Israel along with all the other nations.

47:9 The nobles of the nations assemble,

along with the people of the God of Abraham,

for God has authority over the rulers of the earth.

    He is highly exalted

Reflections:

Why should the people be so happy for God to be their king?
v.1-4 He is able to defeat all the enemies and He provided the best for His covenantal people. He is devoted to them.
The people are commanded to clap and shout when they see how great He is to His people.

Do we see how great God is to us? Jesus defeated death and the devil. He gave us the inheritance in heaven. Thank God we are also His people in Christ. He loves us when we are sinners. Have we praised Him and given Him thanks today?

v.5-9 He will come back one day to rule over all the earth. He will replace all the earthly kings and leaders.
When you are tired of politics and the incapable rulers of the nations. Will you sing praises to welcome our future King? We do have hope, but not on this earth or on any human leaders. Our King over all the earth will come one day.
