3:23-4:7
Repeated phrases:
(1) Guardian, slave and the son v.24,26, 4:1,2,3,5,6,7
The Law was the guardians who oversee the son when he was young. The son was treated no different from a slave slave when he was young 4:2. Until the time comes and things will change. It was the time when Christ came and He redeemed us 3:24, 4:3-5. The key point is, we are no longer under the guardian now v.25.
God's revelation is progressive. He has a plan for the salvation history of mankind. What we know now is different than what the OT people or even the NT people (before the Bible had finished). And His plan for the progression has purpose. The Law is our "guardian" or "manager" 4:2.
(NET) the man, usually a slave … whose duty it was to conduct a boy or youth … to and from school and to superintend his conduct gener.; he was not a ‘teacher’ ...
Under the Law people were told how to live right, even though no one can keep the perfect Law and declared righteousness.
(2)The sons of God v.26, 4:6
The blessings of the Sonship was expanded from v.26-29 and 4:6-7.
According to 3:26-29, we have clothed ourselves with Christ, we are one in Christ and we are Abraham's descendants and heirs according to the promise.
The voice for the verb for cloth is middle voice, that means we doing the action to ourselves and cloth means
(BDAG) metaphorically, very often, of the taking on of characteristics, virtues, intentions, etc.
In other words, those immersed themselves in Christ (the symbolic meaning of baptism) are those who put on (clothed) Christ's characteristics to themselves. What we immersed in we put that on. We are the mini-Christ. That is the reflection of our sonship, like father like son. Isnt this a wonderful blessing!
Reflection: What do you immersed yourself in right now? Do you immersed in the TV/internet/phone or the worldly ideas? What do you want to put on today?
According to 4:6-7, we have the Spirit in our hearts who calls "Abba Father!"
(NET) “Abba” is the Greek transliteration of the Aramaic אַבָּא (’abba’), literally meaning “my father” but taken over simply as “father,” used in prayer and in the family circle, and later taken over by the early Greek-speaking Christians.
Believers felt very close to the Father and this feeling comes from our heart when the Spirit prompts us.
Reflection: Have you experienced the closeness to the Father prompt by the Holy Spirit? I mean it is not just in your knowledge that you know God is your Father. It is the closeness that you have in your heart.
Thank God for His plan for mankind. Thank God for His blessings to us individually.
