When?
During the night, Jacob quickly took his family crossed the river v.22,23. He was threatened by Esau and felt very afraid.
Who?
A man v.24 (NET) Reflecting Jacob’s perspective at the beginning of the encounter, the narrator calls the opponent simply “a man.” Not until later in the struggle does Jacob realize his true identity.
Jacob seeing God face to face v.30.
v.30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, explaining, “Certainly I have seen God face to face and have survived.”
What happened?
Wrestling. (NET)Jacob wrestled with a man thinking him to be a mere man, and on that basis was equal to the task. But when it had gone on long enough, the night visitor touched Jacob and crippled him. Jacob’s request for a blessing can only mean that he now knew that his opponent was supernatural.
Why?
Why did God appear to Jacob? What was His purpose? Why was it possible that God would have lost any match?
At the end of the wrestling, God blessed Jacob by giving him a new name, Israel.
(NET)...it means “God fights.” This name will replace the name Jacob; it will be both a promise and a call for faith. In essence, the LORD was saying that Jacob would have victory and receive the promises because God would fight for him.
Reflection: In the time of your most weak how did God encourage you? God encouraged Jacob by fighting with him and let him know that he prevailed. God also blessed him that he would have victory because God fights for him. In a sense God did not change our environment to help us. He changes us. He gave us the ability and let us know we can do it. He also fights for us, giving us the strength to prevail.

1. Context and content
Jacob was afraid of Esau and he used all his planning to avoid the lost v.1-22.
In the wrestling the man could not defeat Jacob, but he struck Jacob and caused his hip socket to dislocate. Then Jacob sensed that he man was divine and he asked for blessings (Probably related to the present situation) v.29.
2. Repeated
A.
25 When the man saw that he could not defeat Jacob, he struck the socket of his hip so the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
28 “No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him, “but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”
Jacob prevailed in his fight and therefore a blessing was given to him. Israel means God fights. (BKC) God would fight for Israel....Jacob had “overcome” obtained the significance of a promise for the nation’s forthcoming struggles
B.
v.30 Then he blessed Jacob there. 30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, explaining, “Certainly I have seen God face to face and have survived.”
11 Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children.
After the blessing of the giving of a new name, "being fought for by God," Jacob changed his focus. Before, he focus on the fear of Esau. Now, he was glad that he was saved in the presence of God.
His faith in God was good enough to overcome his fear of Esau even though now he limping and lost his ability to fight for himself.
(NET-On the surface Jacob seems to be saying that he saw God and survived. But the statement may have a double meaning, in light of his prayer for deliverance in v. 11. Jacob recognizes that he has survived his encounter with God and that his safety has now been guaranteed).
3. Reflection: Jacob was not just given a blessing from God came with a new name which meant a promise of being fought by God, he also had faith in that name. God promises blessings to me, too (Romans 4:7, 5:1-11; Eph 1:3-14). My blessings are great e.g. the blessing of being the children of God is even great than Jacob's. Whom shall I fear if I am the children of the most high God Who loves me and calls me His own children? Do I have faith? Do I have so much faith that I will not fear the danger from mankind?
