Psalm 41

Overview: (NET) The psalmist is confident (vv. 11–12) that the Lord has heard his request to be healed (vv. 4–10), and he anticipates the joy he will experience when the Lord intervenes (vv. 1–3). One must assume that the psalmist is responding to a divine oracle of assurance. The final verse is a fitting conclusion to this psalm, but it is also serves as a fitting conclusion to the first “book” (or major editorial division) of the Psalter. Similar statements appear at or near the end of each of the second, third, and fourth “books” of the Psalter (see Pss 72:19, 89:52, and 106:48 respectively). The emotion up's and down's: (up) v.1-3 David was very confident according to the character of the LORD He will save his life because David has treated the poor properly v.1. (NET) "One who treats the poor properly" The psalmist is characterizing himself as such an individual and supplying a reason why God has responded favorably to his prayer. The Lord’s attitude toward the merciful mirrors their treatment of the poor. (down) v.4 David asked for mercy when he was sicked and he realized that it was due to his sin. (further down) v.5-10 The cruelty of the enemies and the attacks came even from his friends. "...he pretend to be friendly...when he leaves he slanders me" v.6, "whisper insults about me to one another" v.7, "even my close friend whom I trusted...turned against me" v.9. I think David must be really mad when he wrote this. That's why he said in v.10, As for you, O LORD, have mercy on me and raise me up, so I can pay them back!” (up) v.11-13 By the fact that his enemy did not triumph over him, David knew that God was please with him. He still upheld David. v.12 As for me, you uphold me because of my integrity; you allow me permanent access to your presence Reflection: As a conclusion of our section of the book of Psalm I think the emotion of psalm is very complex. At first glance I think all the psalms are very similar. However, they are all very details in describing our emotions especially when we are in trouble. We are sure that God will help us, but how about my sin? Will that be a reason for my sickness? When we are down the enemies will not give us a break. Even our friends might say something to put us down. However, with the presence of the LORD we could be confident again. When we read these psalms our praises to God become richer. We see the salvation of the LORD to be so wonderful! Let our hearts join the psalmist to praise God together, v.13 The LORD God of Israel deserves praise in the future and forevermore! We agree! We agree! Audrey
