Genesis 6:9-22

I. The Contrast: 2 parties were described in this passage: Noah and the world Noah was like the light in the darkness. He was in sharp contrast to his surrounding 6:8 But Noah found favor in the sight of the LORD. Note the word "but," which means "God condemns the human race, but he is pleased with Noah." v.9 Noah was a godly man; he was blameless among his contemporaries. He walked with God. (NET) “Blameless” is used of men in Gen 17:1 (associated with the idiom “walk before,” which means “maintain a proper relationship with,” see 24:40); Deut 18:13 (where it means “blameless” in the sense of not guilty of the idolatrous practices listed before this; see Josh 24:14); Pss 18:23, 26 (“blameless” in the sense of not having violated God’s commands); 37:18 (in contrast to the wicked); 101:2, 6 (in contrast to proud, deceitful slanderers; see 15:2); Prov 2:21; 11:5 (in contrast to the wicked); 28:10; Job 12:4. The earth was ruined v.11, 12, and filled with violence v.11, 13. Even the living creatures were sinful v.12. Reflection: the judgment of God (the Flooding) is not unfair. God persevere those who do not follow the world in their sins but keep themselves pure. II. The Hope: The ark saves life v.18, 19. It was built based on the obedient of Noah. 6:14 Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood The form of verb for "make" is an imperative or this is an order. (NET) A motif of this section is that Noah did as the LORD commanded him—he was obedient. 6:22 And Noah did all that God commanded him—he did indeed. Reflection: (1) I think that it is useless to flatten the curve if God is going to ruin the whole earth with the pandemic today. If that is the case then where is the Ark? Is our home the ark as someone suggested? In the NT, we know that Christian will be rapture when Jesus comes back again 1 Thess 5. But before that I dont think our home is the ark. Jesus is our ark because He took us home when we die and when He comes back He will take our body to heaven (rapture). (2) The hope was given, which is the Ark and it was built by the obedient of Noah. God did not just give Noah the way out but descending the Ark from heaven. Noah needed to make it. Again, the theme of obedient is repeated here. The way to walk with God and enjoy his blessings is by obedient. Audrey
