Overview: NET, The psalmist cries out to the Lord for deliverance from his dangerous enemies, who have surrounded him and threaten his life. Confident that the Lord will intervene, he then vows to thank the Lord publicly for his help and anticipates a time when all people will recognize the Lord’s greatness and worship him.
1. This passage was quoted by Jesus and others during the crucifixion.
The last words Jesus said before He died,
22:1 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
People who passing by mocked at Jesus,
22:7 All who see me taunt me;
they mock me and shake their heads.
22:8 They say,
“Commit yourself to the LORD!
Let the LORD rescue him!
Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him.”
NET, Shake their heads. Apparently this refers to a taunting gesture.
When the soldiers diving the clothes of Jesus,
22:18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;
they are rolling dice for my garments.
2. This Psalm used multiple of images to show the danger of the threats coming from the enemies: powerful bulls surround me v.12, roaring lion that rips its prey v.13, wild dogs surround me v.16, lion pinning my hands and feet v.16, save my life from the claws of the wild dogs v.20, from the mouth of lion...horns of the wild oxen v.21.
3. From v.21b-31, we see that God answered David and rescue him.
22:24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed;
he did not ignore him;
when he cried out to him, he responded.
4. However, God did not rescue Jesus. Jesus suffered the same thing as David, and He cried as David cried out to God. He was oppressed by the fearful enemies like David, but God was silent to Him.
We know that the silence was because of us, because of our sins Jesus was separated with the Father. Or, we can deduce that God will rescue His people according to His character like what we see in Ps 22. When He does not rescue He that is because He has a plan.
We saw Christians suffered and died. Perhaps, we ourselves went through that, too. We trusted that God has a purpose when He chose not to rescue.
