psalm 19

Overview: NET, The psalmist praises God for his self-revelation in the heavens and in the Mosaic law. The psalmist concludes with a prayer, asking the Lord to keep him from sinning and to approve of his thoughts and words.

v.1-6 God's revelation in nature.
v.7-10 God's revelation in the Bible.
v.11-14 is the key to this passage.

I dont know about you, but  I cannot identified with David in the previous Psalms. What I mean is in those Psalms David asked for the deliverance from his enemies from God because he was blameless and his enemies were wicked. Am I blameless and deserve the rescue from God? Ps 19 gave me the answer.

In v.1-6 the revelation of God is throughout the earth and universe. The sky speaks the glory of God and its words carry to the distant horizon v.4. The sun, which is part of the sky, radiates heat and nothing can escape v.6. Nothing or none can said that they do not know God.

In v.7-10 the Law persevere one's life v.7a, and can provide everything one needs to live a blameless life v.7b-11. NET, the law preserves the life of the one who studies it by making known God’s will. Those who know God’s will know how to please him and can avoid offending him. See v. 11a. When David realized that there is no excuse for anyone to say they do not know God or they do not know how to live a blameless life, he prayed for 2 things to ensure that he would not sinned against God.

(1) v.12 Who can know all his errors? Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of. Remember, the sun and its heat? Nothing can hidden from it. Here also David realized that no sin can be hidden from God. Therefore, he prayed that "perfect moral discernment is impossible to achieve. Consequently it is inevitable that even those with good intentions will sin on occasion." NET.

(2) v.13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins; do not allow such sins to control me. Then I will be blameless, and innocent of blatant rebellion. He asked God to control him from committing willful sins. As a result he can be blameless and he can be restful that God will deliver him from all enemies. v. 14 May my words and my thoughts be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my sheltering rock and my redeemer
